Job Description:
- Prepare and update training lessons and other training assignments for various training courses for the Company in technical subjects encompassing Transport and Work Equipment. Utilize theoretical and practical applications used for instructing all employees within Hydro One and external clients. Receive assignment and outline of requirements from Supervisor. Perform necessary field and office research. Maintain an awareness of the continuing development in training personnel and keep abreast of the changing pace of modern technology. Contact knowledgeable and contracted business functional personnel to solicit professional and practical views and suggestions for inclusion in lessons. Prepare and update lessons according to findings. Submit draft copies to Supervisor for approval and incorporate modifications as instructed. Arrange for the production of lesson material, distribute and retain copies as required.
- Instruct trainees and other Company and contract personnel in various settings including classroom, on Transport and Work Equipment, workshops and laboratories, in one of the subjects indicated in various locations throughout Ontario such as, training centres, community colleges, or where adequate facilities are available. Present classroom material and ensure that trainees have an adequate understanding of what is being presented and that learning has taken place. Prove through established feedback methods that the lessons have been completely presented. Provide instruction in Transport and Work Equipment hands on operation, workshops and laboratories in the areas of skill training required for all levels of development. Provide instruction in appropriate levels of mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical and electronic controls, instrumentation and computer equipment as required. Instruct personnel on the proper use and application of hand and power tools, computer terminal operation and repair equipment, in order to be able to perform work required by a trainee when in the workplace.
- Supervise trainees and others on a continuing basis during their attendance at the classroom, workshop, in the field and laboratory. Assign work with instructions and direction as deemed necessary. Provide advice and guidance during progress and assist in resolving problem areas or clarifying instructions not readily understood. Review work assignments during progress as necessary and check work upon completion of assignment. Advise Supervisor of any problems.
- Participate in the preparation and setting of evaluations complete with marking and grading schemes to gauge comprehension knowledge and preparedness of employees receiving instructions. Forward evaluation to Supervisor and other interested parties as advised.
- Assist others as assigned in setting up workshops, laboratories and other training areas for skill training, including the use of tools and equipment.
- Work with others in developing training aids to enhance presentation of lessons. Review lessons developed for instructing to determine where teaching aids could be most effective. Recommend the purchase of commercially available items for training purposes and obtain as approved. Develop graphs, charts and other material and arrange for photographic and/or printing services as required to produce copies, slides, transparencies and similar material. Establish and maintain an inventory of illustrative materials or teaching aids for reuse or future application. Collaborate with other training groups in the interchange and shared use of teaching aids or facilities.
- Visit locations to observe equipment in operation and the methods, techniques and procedures in practice under current modes of operation, in order to become personally familiar with new and modern equipment and methods.
- Maintain comprehensive records of individual participant attendance, achievement and progress in training. Provide assessment information in this respect to supervisory staff responsible for the total progress and development of trainees, and other personnel in training.
- Maintain workshop laboratory learning centre equipment in good working order and take inventory of equipment, tools and consumable items from time to time and report discrepancies to Supervisor for action.
- Qualify for and maintain Signing Authority in the Company's Ministry of Transportation Driver's License program. This is accomplished by holding a class AZ driver's License in good standing for a minimum 5 years.
- Perform other duties as required.
Selection Criteria:
- Requires knowledge of the principles and theories sufficient to allow an understanding of the principles of Transport and Work Equipment and equipment operation utilized at a level to adequately carry out the training activities related to trainees and other Company and contracted personnel.
- Requires knowledge of English, oral and written communication skills, to prepare and present lessons, examinations, teaching aids and comprehensive reports.
- Requires a valid AZ driver's license that can qualify for the Signing Authority program.This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired in and equivalent to a Grade XII education in a secondary school plus intermediate related courses.
- Requires experience in the lines, forestry or electrical maintenance fields to be familiar with the Transport and Work Equipment operation, and the safe operation/maintenance of Company and contracted equipment.
- Requires teaching experience to be familiar with the preparation and format of lesson materials and evaluations, the various types of teaching aids and their values and to assess and maintain accurate records of student progress.
- Requires familiarity with the organization, responsibilities of departmental personnel, programs to be taught, facilities available and the duties and associated supervisory responsibilities. A period of over six years, up to and including eight years, is considered necessary to gain this experience.
- Requires performing field and office research in order to maintain an awareness of developments in technology.
- Requires reviewing course content, reviewing technical literature, discussing various aspects with other training employees.
- Requires experience of subject matter to modify and update programs that will meet course requirements.
- Requires performing duties that result in standing and/or walking for varying periods while instructing, overseeing practical training, writing and on occasion, carrying fairly bulky equipment, teaching aids or training material for short distances.
- Requires on a continuous basis, assigning work to students attending training courses with instructions and direction as deemed necessary.
- Requires providing advice and guidance during progress and assisting in resolving problem areas or clarifying instruction.
- Requires reviewing work assignments during progress and checking work upon completion.
- Requires maintaining order during training sessions and referring disciplinary cases to Supervisor.
- Requires collaborating with training and supervisory employees in the Company and the Ministry of Transportation, to solicit professional and practical views and suggestions on course material, to discuss training problems of mutual interest, or to agree on changes or additions to lesson content and course coverage that would be beneficial to the training program.
- Requires working with others to arrange for the use of their workshop facilities.
- Requires cooperating with representatives of community colleges to establish and confirm schedules for participating in instruction at their college.
- Requires extensive travel to deliver courses and for professional development at various locations around the province, which could result in approximately ten or more night's absence from home each month.
- Must have a demonstrated commitment to Health and Safety.
