Working within Hydro One’s Environmental Services group, the Manager, Environmental Services – Archaeology and Cultural Heritage will develop and lead a team of approximately 10 professionals and service providers to deliver archaeological and cultural heritage assessments for capital transmission and distribution projects across Ontario. Reporting to the Director of Environmental Services, this role ensures compliance with Ontario’s Heritage Act, environmental assessments, permits, approvals, and monitoring, while building strong relationships with internal teams, regulators, Indigenous communities, and stakeholders. The Manager will provide leadership, drive innovation, and support project delivery throughout all phases, requiring travel across the province to engage with communities and oversee field activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership & Team Development
- Develop and lead a team of professional staff, providing coaching, mentoring, and performance management.
- Assign duties, manage organizational changes, and authorize expenses and pay.
- Demonstrate visible leadership to maintain a safe and healthy workplace.
- Project & Program Delivery
- Oversee archaeological and cultural heritage assessments for capital and maintenance programs within established scope, budget, and timelines.
- Support environmental requirements including assessments, permits, approvals, and monitoring throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure high-quality, cost-effective services that comply with Hydro One policies, standards, and environmental laws.
- Compliance & Regulatory Oversight
- Manage Hydro One’s compliance with the Identification & Evaluation Process and maintain its status under the Ontario Heritage Act.
- Monitor legislative changes, best practices, and approval processes to identify risks and opportunities.
- Contribute to regulatory approvals.
- Stakeholder & Indigenous Engagement
- Engage effectively with Indigenous communities to align work with provincial requirements while respecting community protocols.
- Support strategic resolution of misalignments between Indigenous expectations and regulatory requirements.
- Lead engagement activities with the public, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders through meetings and communications.
- Procurement & Vendor Management
- Oversee procurement and vendor performance for archaeological, cultural heritage, and environmental consulting services.
- Maintain and review consulting service contracts to ensure quality and compliance.
- Strategic Support & Collaboration
- Ensure consistency in applying legislation, regulations, and policy documents, including provincial Standards & Guidelines.
- Maintain effective relationships with ministries and regulatory agencies.
- Participate in internal and external committees and project meetings to support environmental leads and foster staff growth.
Qualifications
- Advanced degree in Environmental Science, Archaeology, Cultural Heritage, or related field.
- Extensive experience in environmental compliance, cultural heritage management, and project delivery.
- Proven leadership and team development skills.
- Strong knowledge of Ontario environmental and heritage legislation.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including experience working with Indigenous communities.
- Ability to manage budgets, contracts, and vendor performance.
- Valid drivers license is required.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in archaeology, cultural heritage/anthropology, environmental studies, planning, natural sciences or related field.
