General Accountabilities:

  • Participate on a team in performing assigned responsibilities.
  • Conduct analytical investigations in a wide variety of technical areas in the Special Studies team, as demands, workload and priorities dictate (e.g. Short-circuit studies, DER integration issues, Inductive coordination, EMF calculation, Power Quality investigation, Station grounding, electromagnetic transient simulations, equipment specifications)
  • Develop strong working relationships with various line-of-business departments where engineering support of operational issues cross inter-business unit boundaries
  • Participate in teams to resolve operational issues with other line of business departmental staff
  • Provide support to the Planning and Asset Management Business Units as well as to other interfacing Lines of Businesses (OGCC, Project Management, Engineering etc.)
  • Provide operations support and input to Hydro One strategic initiatives
  • Review and provide feedback on new or revised policies, standards, processes, and procedures from non-operating sources from a Planning perspective
  • Adhere to corporate policies and procedures as required
  • Interface with Asset Management, Planning, Project Management, Engineering & other Lines of Businesses and provide input on issues during planning, design and operational phases of projects
  • Anticipate operating issues and transmission network operating needs in short term and long term and recommend/implement actions in timely manner
  • Support the development and issuance of operating documentation with internal and external stakeholders

Selection Criteria - Essential Competencies:

  • Understanding and analytical skills related to balanced and unbalanced 3-phase power systems.
  • Understanding of P&C design principles and strategies for large interconnected power systems
  • Working knowledge of theory related to modeling of generators, transformers, overhead lines and power cables for short-circuit studies as well as for EMT studies
  • Understanding of application of power-electronic apparatus in 3-phase systems (inverter-based generation, FACTS devices)
  • Knowledge and experience related to industry standards for power switchgear, transformers, surge protective devices, and reactive compensation devices.
  • Experience with power system analysis tools like PSSE, for building or modifying basecases, and conducting power flow, contingency analysis or short circuit studies
  • Experience with power system simulation tools such as the EMTP or PSCAD for conducting switching transient studies, insulation coordination studies, and inductive coordination studies
  • Demonstrated organizational and planning skills, including ability to keep project accountabilities on track
  • Ability to work and contribute in team environments.
  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills on topics of moderate depth and complexity
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with both internal and external customers
  • Self-starter, able to work with minimal supervision and comfortable with initiating independent actions
  • For this position a university degree in power engineering or applied sciences or equivalent is considered necessary It is expected that to qualify for this position 6 to 8 years of experience in power system engineering, preferably in Planning, Operations, or P&C would be required.  Candidates with fewer qualifications or less experience but demonstrating good grasp of technical fundamentals may be considered for a lower-rated position.
  • All appointees to MP4, MP5 and MP6 “Engineer” jobs will be required to possess a valid PEO license prior to the start date. Where Hydro One hires an employee into an “Engineer” job and the appointee does not currently hold a PEO license, but is licensed as a professional engineer in good standing from another Canadian engineering association/order, the appointee will not commence employment until such time that they can show proof that they have made application to the PEO in order to be deemed licensed in the province of Ontario.
