Reporting to the Sr. Manager of Strategic Projects within the Strategic Projects department of Hydro One’s Transmission and Stations organization, the qualified candidate(s) will lead complex

projects through their entire life cycle, including development, regulatory approvals, construction, and commissioning within a culture focused on safety and environmental excellence. They will

provide outstanding project management skills and leadership of a project team throughout all phases of the project life cycle. Extensive experience in project development, stakeholder

engagement, contract management and administration, scheduling, monitoring, tracking, reporting and controlling projects within the electrical transmission lines and stations sector is

required.

 

General Accountabilities:

  • Lead and manage complex transmission lines and station projects.
  • Implement quality assurance and control mechanisms by utilizing problem-solving techniques, audits and evaluations for ongoing project quality and continuous improvement.
  • Manage and perform the entire life cycle of work programs, resolving performance issues, scheduling, and control issues. Define objectives, complete tasks, and produce deliverables critical to the project's success and in developing and implementing contractual agreements.
  • Identify staffing, material, and project management support needs, as required. Identify the project components, ensuring the project team understands the deliverables from start to finish.
  • Manage risks related to the identification, quantification, response development, and response control throughout a project by establishing a project management process for identifying, analyzing, prioritizing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and documenting.
  • Develop and communicate risk responses through acceptance, avoidance, or mitigation.
  • Provide project management and facilitation services through all phases of systems project life cycles, including needs assessment, support business case development, support approval, project management implementation, and transition to operational status.
  • Develop project strategies and plans and provide consultation and support for developing project management strategies about assets, technology, and systems. Identify opportunities for cost savings.
  • Be responsible for the work of staff assigned to participate in the project teams or assisting other work activities by planning, organizing, assigning, and checking their work and giving advice, guidance and direction as necessary.
  • Accountable for developing and implementing project plans in conjunction with subject matter experts. Plans include stakeholder engagement, real estate acquisition, safety, environmental, engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

Selection Criteria & Relevant Experience:

  • Requires a knowledge of business administration and project management to integrate and coordinate information services.
  • Requires experience leading complex projects through their entire life cycle, including development, regulatory approvals, construction, and commissioning, within a culture focused on safety and environmental excellence.
  • Requires a knowledge of information technology and systems associated with project management activities.
  • Requires a good knowledge of English to communicate effectively with others and prepare technical reports.
  • This knowledge is usually acquired after four years of university training (Grade XII plus five years).
  • Requires experience in project management through all phases of a project life cycle, including needs assessment, business case development, approvals (i.e., environmental assessment, leave to construct, etc.), execution and commissioning.
  • Requires experience in managing multiple work programs and effectively leading and facilitating teams consistent with the goals and philosophies of continuous quality improvement.
  • over ten years is considered necessary to gain this experience.

 

Essential Competencies:

  • Demonstrates a solid adherence to safety policies and procedures and leads by example.
  • Experience managing and controlling large capital infrastructure projects with such experience in linear infrastructure is regarded as valuable.
  • Demonstrated professional communication skills, both oral and written, to communicate
  • effectively.
  • Demonstrated record of solving problems that require analysis of numerous variables and alternative solutions and exercising judgment.
  • Demonstrated record of initiative-taking behavior and perseverance to accomplish objectives despite obstacles.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate work (technical and non-technical) and work in a team environment.
  • The ability to understand the business implications of decisions and the ability to strive to improve organizational performance.
  • Flexibility and adaptability regarding changes to work, re-prioritization and managing multiple projects or tasks.
  • The desire to assist others to meet their needs.
  • The ability to build persuasive arguments based on logic and fact.
  • The discipline to perform regular monitoring, control, and accurate reporting for projects.
  • The ability to analyze financial results and data and take appropriate action.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to project sites.
