Job Function:

Perform as a senior engineering design authority in the field of designs for transmission stations and/or related facilities in any assigned project. Reporting to the Manager – Dx Asset Management – Sustainment and Strategy, the position will be accountable for the following:

 

General Accountabilities:

  • Design and analyze Distribution Station Engineering solutions and review the work of others, providing advice, guidance, approval and instruction to ensure the quality and accuracy of work is maintained
  • Perform as a senior engineering design authority in the field of designs for transmission stations and/or related facilities in any assigned project.

  • Provide technical advice, direction and related support services to Customer, Accounts, Distribution Lines, Work Methods, Planning and Legal on design, safety, unforeseen issues, processes, technical specifications, operational requirements, maintenance and limitations of the distribution system; in the resolution of Distribution Station Design issues in the Hydro One Distribution System
  • Maintain an awareness of technological advances related to Distribution Station Design including work tools, equipment, processes, databases and practices to enhance work management and execution.

  • Carry out studies to develop non-standard or new design criteria required. Periodically, assign work to staff delegated to assist in special design studies, giving technical advice, guidance and leadership and checking completed work.
  • Provide a consulting service to internal and external personnel on assigned project design areas. Review and discuss design problems referred. Provide authoritative recommendations to internal groups, and technical assistance to external groups through the application of specialized engineering design skills and knowledge. Co-ordinate the testing and supplying of special components by manufacturers and suppliers, and provide advice and guidance to their engineering personnel on design aspects.
  • Serve on internal and external technical committees as a representative of the division. Contribute as a committee member or working group chairperson to technical design improvement and solving problems of common interest. Provide engineering advice, guidance and leadership on design practicalities and advanced technology.
  • Carry out field investigations to solve installation problems, to participate in solving maintenance and operating problems and to correct defects and recommend modifications.
  • Provide technical training to assist in the development of other design engineering personnel. Develop and present material for technical training courses, such as design methodology. Provide advice and technical guidance on project design and development problems.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

Selection Criteria:

Essential Knowledge:

  • Requires an engineering knowledge of design principles, mechanical, structural, and electrical theories, and mathematics, in electrical field to determine basic and final design arrangements for components and systems.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Distribution Station Design, Construction and Maintenance; including technical analysis, assessment of optimizing station design, power quality resolution options, materials, life cycle design/cost, sustainment development, operating characteristics.
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of a four year university education in engineering design principles or by having the equivalent level of education.

  • Requires experience in general engineering design to acquire a detailed knowledge of equipment and its application, and the design of components involved. 

  • Knowledge of CSA, IEEE, ASTM and other relevant Standard bodies relating to the Distribution system is strongly desired.
  • Must have a sound knowledge of the Distribution system design standards and technical requirements related to construction, operation and maintenance.
  • Must have solid knowledge of electric utility practices and operation of Transmission and Distribution networks.
  • Must have knowledge of Ontario’s Regulation 22/04 requirements.
  • Must possess a valid P.Eng License

  • Requires experience to put engineering theories into practice, and to become familiar with the layout of services and equipment and of problems involved in installation and operation.

  • Requires experience in the division to become familiar with the organization and the interrelation of its various functions with those of other departments and divisions involved in construction.

  • Requires experience in an engineering design capacity to become familiar with practices, procedures, and standards involved in component and system design.

  • A period of up to ten years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
