Job Function:

Assist the LOB personnel in carrying out health and safety programs established for the line of business to ensure Hydro One’s and Contractors' are compliance with current legislative, Corporate and Line of Business safety requirements and risk management programs. Reporting to the Manager, Health & Safety Field Support supporting Station Services (Hamilton/Niagara/Western).

 

General Accountabilities:

  • Assist the Supervisor and LOB personnel in developing, implementing and maintaining health and safety protection programs. Assist in developing engineering and construction work methods, work application and job planning used in work activities. Assist in developing safe work methods and procedures. Advise staff on all matters pertaining to health and safety protection including corporate and Line of business safety requirements, Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Health Act, etc
  • Assist in resolving safety disputes by providing expert advice to both union and management staff. Represent the business unit and LOB personnel with the Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Health, WSIB and Joint Health and Safety Committees concerning safety requirements, as directed by the Manager, Health and Safety Field Services and Health and Safety Coordinator.
  • Assist in maintaining records of all health and safety matters. Assist in preparing Emergency Response Procedures. Keep informed of new developments in the field of Health and Safety including Health and safety legislation, practices, etc.
  • Assist the Supervisor LOB personnel monitoring and assessing health and safety, protection, management programs and procedures. Prepare reports for LOB personnel on the degree of compliance. Make effective recommendations for improvements. Perform safety inspections and audits, investigate accidents and prepare reports. Make recommendations based on findings. Monitor for hazardous agents and advise on the safe handling of such materials. Review and analyze accident statistics to determine developing trends and make comparisons with corporate and LOB objectives. Prepare reports to LOB personnel.
  • Prepare information and conduct meetings including safety presentations.
  • Provide or coordinate the development, delivery and assessment of safety training programs such as general safety training, as required.
  • Act as a coach and facilitator and assign and check the work of assigned staff on a periodic basis. Provide advice, guidance and instruction, as required.
  • Work line management and the Rehabilitation Group to promote rehabilitation work, as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

Selection Criteria:

  • Requires a knowledge of health and safety management principles to develop health and safety protection programs to implement audits and assessments of health and safety performance.
  • Requires a knowledge of mathematics and statistics to analyze health and safety data and trends. Requires a knowledge of computer technology to develop health and safety management systems.
  • Requires facility in written and oral expression, training methods and techniques in order to coordinate health and safety training and to prepare comprehensive reports and to communicate with various internal and external contacts.
  • Requires experience with the Lines of Business being supported, or equivalent work methods, work application and job planning work activities.
  • Requires an understanding of health and safety legislation in order to provide advice and recommendations and assess management practices and performance.
  • Requires experience with the interpretation and application of health and safety legislation and a good understanding of Corporate policies and practices to assess management practices.
  • Requires experience in health and safety issues in order to work with the Ministry of Health, WSIB, Ministry of Labour, TSSA, and Joint Health and Safety Committees concerning Health and safety requirements.
  • Requires experience in dealing with external service organizations in the provision of health and safety services.
  • A period of over 6 years and up to and including 8 years is considered necessary to gain this experience 
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired through the completion of 4 years of University training
